I fly to China tomorrow to begin a new chapter of my life. In some ways, it feels like I’m flying to the moon.
I’m going to live in a place where I don’t speak the language and don’t know a single soul. Yet I’m excited by the unknown and invigorated by the possibilities.
Though I’ve traveled extensively around the world, I’ve never lived in another country. I’ve always wanted to immerse myself in another culture, preferably one that’s radically different from the U.S. And China certainly fits the bill.
While the country has made remarkable economic progress in the past 30 years, it remains an authoritarian state that severely limits free speech and political dissent. It’s also a nation where, at least in the major cities, the air is noxious and the water is undrinkable. But there may be no other place on earth that teems with more energy, creativity and hope for the future.
I hope to experience all of that during my year in China. And I plan to share it with everyone who reads my blog.
We are with you (vicarously) all the way! We hope this will be the great adventure you are seeking. Alli’s former roommate lived in Japan for two years, and has now been in Singapore for two years. Alli visited her last year and ventured to Thailand during the same trip. Singapore. Is a far cry from where you will be, but I’ll bet the karma will be equal. We pray for your safe travel. Good luck Rick! Everyone at db Orthopedic Physical Therapy wish you a safe and healthy adventure.
Good luck Rick! You are going to have an absolute blast. Enjoy every moment ’cause it’ll probably fly by before you know it. I clearly remember the nervousness and excitement in the pit of my stomach when I was leaving Ireland to live in Switzerland for just six months. Unlike you, I was going to a country where everything is pristine and they all speak at least three languages (one of which is always English and usually they speak it so well that they freely correct the grammer of native English speakers like myself :)), and I was traveling with five good friends. Just like you, I was leaving the ones I love behind for just a little while. You’ll be back before you know it and we cannot wait to hear your stories. Take care of yourself.
